The six-storey, multi-purpose university building in south-west London has been named alongside Carmody Groarke's Hill House Box in Helensburgh and SelgasCano’s Second Home offices in Holland Park on the 40-strong shortlist for the 2022 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.
Also known as the Mies van der Rohe Award and usually biennial, it is widely recognised as the highest accolade in European architecture. It was last won in 2019 before the Covid pandemic by Lacaton & Vassal for its innovative retrofit of three 1960s slab blocks in Bordeaux.
Other projects vying for this year's prize include David Chipperfield Architects’ revamp of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie and Neutelings Riedijk Architects' conversion of the Gare Maritime in Brussels, once Europe’s largest goods railway station, into a new city district.

The 40 shortlisted works are spread across 18 different European countries. Austria, France and Spain boast the most contenders with five projects in each.
Five finalists will be announced on 16 February with the winner announced in May at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.
