First of the AJ Retrofit Awards 2023 shortlists revealed

The AJ can exclusively reveal the first set of shortlists for the AJ Retrofit Awards 2023: the cultural and religious; and health and community categories

Citizens Design Bureau’s revamp of the historic Jacksons Lane theatre, which is housed in a Grade II-listed former church in Highgate, and CarverHaggard's 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning - a £1.1 million retrofit for a Brixton contemporary arts organisation - have both made the cultural and religious building up to £5 million category.

In the £5 million and over category, two 2022 AJ Architecture Awards-winning projectsThe Burrell Collection by John McAslan + Partners and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios’ Bath Abbey Footprint Project – have both made the shortlist.

TDO, ScottWhitbyStudio, New Practice and Freehaus all feature in the Health and Community category, with low-budget, high-impact projects including Freehaus’s Africa Centre in its new Southwark home.

In total, 124 projects have been shortlisted for the 2023 AJ Retrofit Awards with further category finalists revealed each day this week.

NB due to strike action by rail workers, the date of the Retrofit Awards event has changed. The winners will now be announced on the evening of 4 April 2023 at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London. Register here for the event and to book your table.
