AJ100 Collaboration of the Year 2023 contenders announced

The Architects’ Journal can reveal the five contenders in the running for the AJ100 Collaboration of the Year 2023 Award

Architype has been shortlisted for its collaboration with Peter Kelly at contractor ISG and interior designer Eve Waldron on Entopia, a retrofit for the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). As well as achieving EnerPHit standards, the project met WELL Gold and BREEAM Outstanding ratings.

For the Energy Pods initiative, Atkins collaborated with Crawford Wright of the Department for Education on a prototype low-to-zero carbon pod for heating and hot water that will help schools move away from fossil fuels. The idea will be tested at six case study sites.

The Part Z Team (Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, with IStructE, University of Strathclyde, CIBSE, Targeting ZERO, and Arup) has been shortlisted for its involvement in the proposed Part Z – which aims to regulate embodied carbon emissions through mandated reporting and limits. The practice worked with representatives of the Institution of Structural Engineers, University of Strathclyde, CIBSE and Targeting Zero to author a proof-of-concept document for the regulation of embodied carbon.

The Public Housing Pattern Book is the result of a collaboration between Hawkins\Brown and Jacob Wilson of Be First, the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham’s wholly-owned development company. Working with Ramboll and Cast, Hawkins\Brown developed guidance for architects and engineers to implement a design for manufacture and assembly approach. This will be open-sourced for use by other affordable housing providers.

The shortlist is completed by a collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and the Education Above All Foundation. They worked together to develop modular play and education spaces for displaced children. The design of the tents allows for easy installation, reassembly and repair. Twenty-seven of the tents are being used in Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

Last year’s Collaboration of the Year winners were Stride Treglown and Format Engineers for the Sinking House installation, in collaboration with artist Anna Gillespie, Fifield Moss Carpentry and many local organisations in Bath.

The winners of all the AJ100 awards will be announced in June.
