AJ100 Building of the Year 2021 shortlist announced

Architype and AJ100 newcomers Morris+Company are among the eight practices shortlisted for AJ100 Building of the Year 2021

The shortlist includes two education projects. Designed by Architype, Hackbridge Primary School in Sutton is the first school in the country to achieve the Passivhaus Plus standard. In Wolverhampton, Associated Architects’ School of Architecture and Built Environment for the University of Wolverhampton, is a conversion and extension of a historic former brewery.

Hawkins\Brown’s The Plumstead Centre also creates new uses, converting a Grade II-listed historic library into a community, leisure and library building.

Masterplanned by Sheppard Robson, Barts Square establishes a mixed-use quarter in the City of London through a combination of new build and re-use of existing buildings. Another mixed-use scheme, 80 Charlotte Street by Make, creates commercial, residential, and retail space along with a small public park in London’s Fitzrovia.

AJ100 newcomer Morris+Company is shortlisted for Belle Vue, a holistic retirement community in Hampstead, north London, for Pegasus Life.

Two overseas projects are also in the running. Designed by WilkinsonEyre, One Barangaroo is a six-star luxury hotel resort and is, at 275m high, the tallest building in Sydney, Australia. Grimshaw’s Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion at the Dubai Expo 2020 is an architectural showcase for sustainability strategies. Delayed by the pandemic, the Expo is now due to open in October.

The award is given for the finest building completed by an AJ100-ranked practice during 2020. Last year, the accolade went to the English National Ballet HQ by Glenn Howells Architects.
