Undergraduate

Claudia Luca

Course BA (Hons) Architecture
Studio/unit brief Past Tense, Future Perfect: Birkenhead School of Art
Project title The Empiricism of Art

Project description The creation of the Birkenhead School of Art project uses the empiricist idea that all knowledge is based on experience derived from the senses. The use of pigmented concrete precast panels is reminiscent of the stone textures of the surrounding Georgian buildings. The building further cantilevers the walls and floors, stepping outside the rules of Georgian architecture. The ideas underpinning the placement of each internal room came out of interviews conducted in schools of art. Students shared their experiences of creating art and how the work they produced was shaped by the spaces they inhabited.

Tutor citation Claudia’s project takes a robust approach to the site, responding to its Georgian context with force and vigour. The proposal for a new school of art is resolved as series of cantilevered concrete forms and panels along the street corridor. Jim Sloan

Postgraduate

Jareth Sigat

Course MArch
Studio/unit brief Second Tier Port Cities (Schiedam) (Thesis Studio)
Project title Creative Social Exchange

Project description The influx of asylum seekers into The Netherlands presents an opportunity to explore the positive impacts that can be gained by the recipient country. This project uses the idea of ‘art of making’ as a force to connect two different demographics, focusing on both parties’ shareable art and cultural elements. This will help the refugees adapt and learn about the local culture while sharing their cultures with local communities. The development acts as a cultural hub, providing a new settlement typology with sufficient amenities, and provides optimum comfort to the refugee community before they relocate to new places for work or living.

Tutor citation Jareth’s project is a beautifully crafted exploration of complex ideas through the design of a building. He has developed a brief from his urban analysis through every scale from resolution of architectonic form and masterplan to materials, economics and environment. Philip Lo
