The best retrofit of a house with a project value of up to £500,000 is a bumper category this year with 16 schemes shortlisted. Among them are: Studio Weave's timber Devon retreat; A House within a House in Belsize Park by David Leech Architects; and Low Energy House by Architecture for London which was a contender for the AJ Small Projects prize last year.

The eight projects shortlisted in the House over £500,000 category include Coppin Dockray’s rework of the 1960s Trevor Dannatt house in Hampstead and Maison Colbert by Chris Dyson Architects which features fake retained shopfronts to enhance the streetscape.

Studio Weave is shortlisted for a second time in Listed Building up to £5 million for its timber and pigmented concrete Lea Bridge Library extension in east London which featured in AJ Specification last year.

In total, 124 projects have been shortlisted for the 2023 AJ Retrofit Awards.
