The Manchester-based practice, one of the youngest in the AJ 40 under 40, focuses on building reuse and the high street

With projects including the conversion of a former balloon shop into the practice’s own studio, Manchester-based Editional Studio is setting out its stall as a champion of building re-use and the high street.

The practice –among the youngest in the 40 under 40 – was founded in 2018 by Jack Richards, 30, and Jo Sharples, 32, who had previously worked at Karakusevic Carson Architects and Caruso St John respectively. Editional Studio strives to develop an openness that embraces the general public and the firm’s south Manchester surroundings ‘with an environmental agenda running through’ and hosts exhibitions on architecture and design to illuminate these typically inward-looking sectors. Conscious of the rapid shift to climate-conscious design, it also celebrates sustainable building methods, creative re-use, local materials and the circular economy and the value of craft.

The Chorlton Picturehouse CLT project

One notable scheme is its Chorlton Picturehouse project, where it has aided a community land trust to save a prominent local landmark from the wrecking ball. The early 1920s building was most recently used as a funeral parlour and many of its original features were hidden behind later additions. Editional Studio recognised its latent value and created an exhibition to engage the local community and demonstrate alternative uses for the building. It also tapped into the creative power of its architectural peers in the north of England and Europe by inviting these young practices to explore methods of re-use.
